InTEL: Interactive Toolkit for Engineering Learning

InTEL is a statics learning program sponsored by the National Science Foundation. InTEL aims to assist in creating initial learning environments that encourage and motivate students to become engineers. The program also focuses on attracting and retaining a diverse group of engineering students.

The InTEL Approach

  • Contextualize problems with real world examples
  • Connect diagramming of problems to procedural models of the physical world
  • Connect models to equations for integrated learning

Statics Learning Goals:

  • Model-based reasoning
  • Ability to use Free Body Diagrams to describe a problem
  • Replacing “plug and chug” math formulas with engineering approaches

Context Based Learning:
All students benefit from concrete, real-life, appropriate representations of Statics concepts.

Women and Minorities currently are under-represented among engineers and learn well from context-based problems linked to real-world needs.

Digital models provide a means to link the real-world to free body diagrams and equations.
